Go In With A Clear Goal

If you are not sure what you want your website to do for you, it may be unclear to your developer as well.  You might want the site for product sales.  You might simply want the customer to be aware of the products you have.  Alternatively, you might just want the customer to know who you are, and what you do, so that people will want to contact you to find out more.  Not knowing your goal will cost you money in development time and send mixed signals to your customers.  People are used to using sites that follow goal structures.  Lack of a clear purpose may leave you with a confusing site of little benefit.

Know Your Page Hierachy

Once you know your goal you should have a pretty good idea of what you want your customers to be seeing on your website.  A simple and cost effective format is a home page, an about us page and a contact page.  You may want to present more of what you have to offer.  Consider a general information page about all your products and services, then different pages about individual ones.  Think about what you want your customer to see when they get to your site.  You should know or at least consider what pages you want before you contact your developer.

A Good Starting Place

Find Inspiration.

Sometimes the best way to ask someone for what you want is to show them. Having thought about our tips so far, go online and find sites that you find appealing with similar goals to yours as well as page structures. This will gives you an idea of your own site's potential, which is exciting. It also gives its creator the ability to see through your eyes what is expected of them. In turn, you are a lot more likely to get a site that meets your functional and aesthetic goals. Developers can’t see what you envision unless you show them. Otherwise, they may craft something beautiful, but perhaps not to your taste.

The Big Picture

Think about future growth.

Often WP themes are built for only a certain amount of content and purpose. If you know that you plan on expanding your website content in the future let your developer know ahead of time. For example, in a few years you plan to start selling products online. Choosing a theme that will accommodate this growth is cost-effective. Adding plug in’s and custom coding that will be needed to add that feature later is not. Also, sometimes your chosen website’s theme won’t be compatible with the changes you would like. You may need a whole new site to accomplish your new goals. It will always save you money to think ahead.

Be Involved in Your Content

It can be tempting to let the developer do it all but do they really know your business.  The best person who understands your business, your products or services is you.  It may be difficult for developers to sell something they know little about and you need your customers to be sold on your product or service from your sites content.  If writing content is nail-biting for you, consider giving them the gist of things.  Provide personal pictures and content ideas so they at least have information from the source before writing about you.

Simplicity Reigns.

Keep your design element limited.  Use only a few colours, textures and most definitely not too many font types and sizes.  Add images but make sure they are relevant.  Don’t just add a photo because you feel part of a page is too empty.  Also, keep text simple so that anyone would be able to understand it.  A grade 8 reading level is reccomended.  Include everyone, text should also be in a font large enough that grandma could read it.

Be Patient.

Getting a website is exciting so once the down-payment is down one tends to want it overnight.  While the website appears clean and simple there is a lot going on behind the scenes, connecting elements, and making every interaction function.  Testing will also be required once you get your site for several computer and mobile formats.  Small quirks in coding can only be found by trial and error.  Also, you need to learn how to use it. A good developer will be happy to instruct you on how and when to learn and do more with your website.
